Different First Page and The Two Pieces of a Section...
Different First Page and The Two Pieces of a Section...
If you understand this concept in entirety, then you are far ahead of most people who have trouble dealing with separate sections and the "Different First Page" function when setting up MS Word Documents From Scratch.
Different First Page: Found Under Page Layout (“Layout” 2016 and above), Page Setup and go to "Layout" under Page Setup. You can also find Different First Page under the Header/Footer Ribbon.
Different First Page allows me to place something on Page 1 of a Particular Section (in the Header or Footer) and not carry it forward to the remaining pages of a given section. An example would be the words Execution Copy in the Header on page 1 of a section and not on any other page of this same section.
Conversely, I can exclude something from the first page of a section and then have that excluded item on the second page forward of the section. A good example would be excluding the page number "1" from the bottom of the first page of the main part of your document but having the page numbering come in at the bottom of page 2 as "2" and then continue on until the end of that section no matter how long that section goes on.
When Different First Page is in use every separate Section will be composed of two separate pieces.
The First piece of this Section. The Footer for example will be labeled "First Page Footer Section 1".
The Second piece of the section will be labeled "Footer Section 1".
Note: Without the use of Different First Page, there is no segmentation of each section. Whatever you place on ANY page of the section will go on EVERY page of the section.
Also, when we use Different First Page as soon as we set "page 2" of a given section you are then good for the remaining pages of that section in terms of Header/Footer material no matter how many page it goes on for that section.
When first starting your documents, it is a good policy to go to Page Layout, Page Setup, Layout under Page Setup and choose Section Start "New Page" then check "Different First Page" and apply to "Whole Document." This will ensure that Different First Page is active throughout your entire document and available for each separate section you create within your document.
