Sizing Up Your Documents When Setting Them Up From Scratch!

Sizing Up Your Documents When Setting Them Up From Scratch!

Scenario: An attorney brings to you a document that is composed of hand written pages, typed up pages that will be inserts, some of the typed up pages have document numbers where you can grab the material without having to type the insert related material.  The attorney has asked you to please create a TOC, TOA and Index of Terms page.  You are also informed that there will be an Exhibit A and B in the back of the document.  So knowing this info upfront, how do we go about segmenting the document into its proper sections?

  1. Of course we need a cover page.  Most probably it will need a border and will be centered vertically on the screen.  Therefore we need a Section Break “Next Page” after our cover page.
  2. For our TOC, TOA and Index Pages, we need a page break after the TOC, a page break after the TOA and a Section Break “Next Page” after the Index of Terms page.  This second section will have a i, ii, iii type Numbering.
  3. Our main section of our document (Section 3) will have the 1,2,3 style of Numbering.  You will need “Different First Page” to hold off page 1 on page 1.  At the end of the main part (Section 3) make a Section Break Next Page.
  4. Exhibit A has its own section (Section 4) and will be numbered A-1.  Make a Sectioned Break “Next Page” after your Exhibit A.
  5. Exhibit B has its own Section (Section 5), and will be numbered B-1.

This gives you a little insight on how we go about sizing up documents when we have to do them from scratch.
