Adding Categories To Your Table of Authorities   Many people still generate their Table of Authorities using the MS Word Generic package .  Some firms use 3rd party software such as " Best Authority ". We were working on a large Table of Authorities.  All the entries needed to be marked.  There were cases , statutes , rules , as well as state cases . Within the Mark Citation dialog box it was noted that there was no State Cases category entry nevertheless, the attorney wanted the state cases separated out. 1.  We do not want to go down the road of running the TOA where all the cases were clumped together (Federal and State) whereupon we first had to separate them out manually.  You know that would be both time consuming and each new turnaround of the document would present a new set of separation and unnecessary work. 2.  MS Word does a decent job at generating the TOA provided that we help it to do so.  So let us see the very simple solution 3....

  MS Word Legal and Corporate - Get It Done Please… Scenario :  Attorney has a 47 separate Heading document.  The “Conclusion” Heading keeps saying 48 instead of Section 47.  Each separate section is being controlled by the style Heading 1.  With me so far?  For the first order of business, I ask the secretary if she would go into the multilevel outline dialogue box and confirm that Level 1 is “ Linked ” to Heading 1.  That was confirmed. Getting The Appendix, Exhibit and Annex Numbers To Go Into The TOC... Scenario :  In the back of my document, I have APPENDIX A - D and I have had the request made to include the A- into the actual TOC page numbering. Many of you (and this is fine) will put in an "A- " before the numbered Field Code and it is an easy way to get the A- as part of the page numbering within the document footer itself.  Note: this method will not bring in A-1 into your TOC.  Using Heading Styles for the Headings of your Appendices or Exhibits will not by itself do it either.  Let's go over what needs to be done. 1.  Let us assume that we have a four level Multilevel Outline for the main part of the document so Heading levels 5-9 are available for this routine. 2.  Go to Appendix 1 and apply Heading 5 (or the next available Heading) to the Appendix Heading at the top of the page..  In the Multilevel  Outline, make sure you use "Link Level" to the proper Heading Style" ...

  Heading 2 Won’t Run In The TOC Scenario :  We get a call.  When the secretary runs the TOC they do not see the second level of the TOC even though the Level 2 entries have had Heading 2 applied throughout the document. There are times when we use Cross Referencing to show both a numbered paragraph location as well as the page that it resides on . Look at the example above: 2. Field Shading On Word Fillable Forms - On or Off  On doing fillable forms, using MS Word 2007-365, (under the Developer Tab ), you have a choice of using the old style fillable forms ( Legacy ) or the newer version which is known as ( Content Control ).  The legacy package works in compatibility mode as well as MS Word document mode .  The Content Control package of fillable forms works in documents saved as Microsoft Word Macro Enabled .  If you do not have your Developer Tab, go to File , Options , Customize Ribbon and check the “ Developer Tab ” in the right side of the Customize Ribbon Dialog Box .
