Sometimes A Tab Is Not The Answer..

Sometimes A Tab Is Not The Answer..

Scenario: We have a Heading 1. The Heading 1 is centered.  The Numbering part of the Heading is the word "Section" followed by the Auto Number "1".  The Textual part of the Heading 1 has the words "Deposits, Payments and Withdrawals".  BOTH pieces of the Heading 1 are underscored with no gaps as shown in the picture below:

1.  So for the Numbering and Textual aspect of the Header we take care of the font and make sure we select the Underline.  Before we leave the Multilevel Dialog Box we also choose "Follow Number With Tab", to create space between the Numbering and Textual part of the Heading.

2.  As I said, both pieces of the Heading were using Underscore so once I completed the Font area for the Textual piece (the text past the “Section 1” area), the problem then surfaced.  I am not getting a continuous line as needed.

3.  Although both pieces (Number Aspect and Textual Aspect), were set for Underscore, the "Follow Number With" “Tab” selection has caused a gap which breaks the underscore into two separate pieces instead of the intended one solid line.

4.  Back to the Multilevel Dialog Box, we put in two or three spaces after the auto number (I recommend you use Hard Space which is Control, Shift Spacebar and put in two hard spaces), then remove the setting Follow Number With "Tab Character" and instead choose Follow Number With "Nothing" which is positioned at the bottom right of your Multilevel Dialog Box.

5.  The Heading will now be Underscored from end to end and the spacing between the Numbering and Textual aspect will be sufficient.

6.  Give this a try so you visually go through the scenario.  If this scenario should occur, you won't waste time trying to figure it out.
