MS Word Legal - Think Link When Your Multilevel Outline Does Not Work



Scenario:  Multilevel Outline.  First Level is a "1." and a Heading.  Level 2 is "1.01" and a Heading.  When we bring in the second instance of Heading 1 "2" , the second level below refuses to kick over to 2.01. Instead it says 1.04.

1.  We first stripped the second level paragraph under the "2" back to "Normal Style" (Control Shift N), and reapplied Heading 2, but that did not work.

2.   We went into the Multilevel Dialog Box and checked that the Second Level was "Linked" to the corresponding Heading Level, and the second level was in fact linked to the corresponding Heading 2.

3.  Going back into the Multilevel Dialog Box, I checked Level 1 and instead of Level 1 being Linked to the corresponding Heading Level it said "No Style".  This is what caused the second level not to work.  Once I linked Level 1 to Heading 1, when I brought in the second instance of Heading 1  which is a "2" my Heading 2 came in as it should as 2.01. When I brought in my "3" the first Heading 2 came in as 3.01 and all is well.

4.  When your numbering does not work think Link.
