Flattening An Image To Save a Step, Quality, Time and to Enhance Security.

Premise:  We have been asked to place a passport photo, electronic signature as well as a thumb print photo within a PDF file for a high level transaction.

Whether you prepare all of this in MS Word and then save as PDF or using Adobe Pro or Nuance, preparing the above within Adobe or within Nuance followed by a save, you will have separate layers in the finished PDF file.

The danger is, that those who know how, can go to those layers and remove the added items such as the electronic signature and whatever else, thus making the document unsecured.

The same goes for text form fields that can be edited or patches that are placed over areas of text to obscure or hide items that we do not want the recipient to see.

The question then becomes when we put the MS Word Doc or Adobe Doc together can’t we just print it out and scan it in?

Sure you can, and that would solve the security problem, but what if they wanted the PDF to be saved from the desktop rather than a scan?

We are in a position where we want to "Flatten" the added items so that they meld into the PDF itself and no longer exist as a separate layer.

Remember:  Any PDF that is composed of Layers  has the Danger of items being removed or unintentional info being exposed.

In both Adobe Pro and Nuance there is a selection to "Flatten" the image so that the separate layers are gone and you don't lose quality.

In Nuance, look for the Advanced Processing Tab and select "Flatten".

In Adobe Pro, Click the Layers button, and select "Flatten Layers" from the options menu.
