How do I know there are “Active Links” in the PDF file that was just saved from Word?

I recently did an article entitled:

Word 2007-365 - Using The Hyperlink Feature When Setting Your Cross References...

The essence of the article went through properly inserting cross references so that not only do you have hyperlink capability in the MS Word document but also in the PDF document if it were requested that it be converted with hyperlink capability.

So the question that came up was after one converts the document, how will the attorney know that the hyperlinks work because I no longer see the grey shading that I had when I was in my MS Word Doc.

  1.  So, you went through the entire document and as requested, set the cross references.
  2. As anticipated, the attorney decided that they want the client to receive a PDF version of the document with active hyperlinks.
  3. When you set the cross references in MS Word, you made sure that you checked the “Insert as Hyperlink” section in the Cross Reference Dialog Box.
  4. You now saved the MS Word file as a PDF.
  5. When the attorney receives the PDF he/she will go to the first cross reference to check that they are active.  Anywhere he/she places the cursor on the screen that is NOT a hyperlink the attorney will see a “full hand” icon.  When the attorney places the cursor over an area with a live hyperlink the “full hand” will turn over to a “pointer finger”.  That is how the hyperlink areas are identified within the PDF.
